Deciding to design a custom piece of jewelry is one of the most meaningful decisions you’ll make.
But for most people, the idea of walking into a jeweler’s studio and saying “I want something one-of-a-kind” feels intimidating. What do you actually say? What do you need to bring? How much does it cost to design custom pieces of jewelry?
At Marblehead Custom Jewelry, we work one-on-one with clients throughout the Boston and North Shore area to make that process feel natural and exciting rather than overwhelming. Here’s exactly what to expect when you are looking for a custom piece of jewelry.

Expert Consultation
What Happens at a Custom Jewelry Consultation
Your first appointment is really just a conversation. We want to understand your vision, your budget, your timeline, and the story behind the piece. You don’t need to arrive with sketches or a Pinterest board (though both are welcome). Just show up with an open mind.
We’ll talk through metal types, stone options, and setting styles. If you’re not sure where to start on stones, the GIA’s diamond buying guide is a great primer before your visit. From there we’ll develop initial concepts and pricing before any commitment is made.
What to Bring
- Any inspiration images you’ve saved
- A sense of your budget range
- Your partner’s ring size if you know it
- Any stones or heirloom pieces you want incorporated
How Long Does It Take
Most custom jewelry pieces take 4-8 weeks from approved design to finished piece. If you have a proposal date or event in mind, book your consultation at least 10 weeks out to be safe.
